One in four ski without travel insurance

A quarter of Brits take to the slopes without travel insurance, with five per cent of those wrongly thinking that their European Health Insurance card (formally the E111) will provide full medical cover should they become injured when skiing.
The research, from esure, also revealed that 27 per cent mistakenly believe that all annual travel policies will cover their skiing holidays as standard and 20 per cent would try out an adventure sport like ice-lake diving, off-piste snowboarding or tobogganing that they knew was not covered by their travel insurance policy, knowing full well that they would have to cover the costs themselves if they were injured.
And this is certainly not cheap – treatment can costs thousands of pounds – the helicopter would cost around £1,500 with repatriation costs hitting £4000 from Europe and massive £8000 from the USA and Canada.
Jacky Brown, Head of Travel Insurance at esure, said: "Any winter sports holiday comes with a certain element of risk. Whether on a nursery slope or a black run, accidents do happen and its crucial to have medical cover to avoid footing a hefty bill.
"With the rise in high-adrenaline, adventure sports - such as heli-skiing and ice-lake diving - it's also important to check the insurance small print before booking and be mindful of any exclusions. Call your insurer if you're unsure whether or not you'll be covered."
