AA comments on car insurance crackdown

The AA has reiterated its pleasure with the planned measures to come down more heavily on motorists who drive without car insurance.
Paul Watters, head of public affairs at the association, said that it is pleased by aspects of the crackdown such as the issuance of warning letters and the targeting of persistent offenders.
However, he added that the AA holds concerns that "bureaucratic, database-type issues" could occur as a result of the proposed collaboration between the Department for Transport and the DVLA.
"There are bound to be people who don't get their letter, or are on holiday and forget and there is the risk that some people will see a £100 penalty as a cheaper option that insuring their car," warned Mr Watters.
After a warning letter has been sent, a £100 fine will be imposed on those breaking the law. Following that, anybody who is found to still have no insurance faces losing their vehicle.
